School of Dentistry Professors Visit Universities in China

Last December, Ohannes Melemedjian, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Neural and Pain Sciences, and Richard J. Traub, PhD, professor and vice chair in the Department of Neural and Pain Sciences,  were invited to China to give a series of lectures on their own research and other topics in pain research at the Neuroscience Research Institute, Peking University in Beijing and Xi’an Jiaotong University Health Science Center and Stomatological Hospital. In addition, Traub was invited to become a guest professor of the College of Stomatology at Xi’an Jiaotong University.

Last fall, two groups of faculty from the College of Stomatology visited UMSOD to learn about dental education in the United States.

“I look forward to building on our collaborations with the College of Stomatology and working together on research and exchanging students in the future,” said Traub.

Topic:                                 Non-odontogenic pain as a source of orofacial pain

Col. Michael J. Apicella, DDS ‘84, serves as deputy commander of the Ft. Jackson Dental Health Activity, an adjunct faculty member in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program and Orofacial Pain and an appointed professor of Endodontics at the Uniformed Services University of Health Science at Bethesda, MD.

In 1997, Col. Apicella completed the Army Endodontic Residency at Ft. Gordon, Ga, and in 2001, he was certified by the American Board of Endodontics. In 2008, he completed a fellowship in orofacial pain at the Naval Post Graduate Dental School in Bethesda, MD, and concurrently earned a Masters of Science at George Washington University. In 2009, he became board certified in orofacial pain.

After completing the fellowship, Col. Apicella served until 2012 as dental clinic chief at the Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Ft. Gordon, Ga.  During that time, he served in Iraq for seven months as chief of dental clinics in Balad and Talil. He currently serves as specialty leader and endodontics consultant to the Surgeon General of the U.S. Army.

The deadline to submit both your application and the faculty recommendation form is Friday, February 10, at midnight EST.

Please refer to the following tips to ensure the application process goes smoothly for you:

  • Please prepare your personal statement before filling out the application form. You cannot save the progress of your application, and it is required that you submit your personal statement with the rest of your information. Please review the criteria of the personal statement on the application page before preparing it.
  • List as much information as you feel is relevant for the fields on leadership, research, awards, extracurricular activities, etc. You may list as much of your experience and as many accolades as you see fit.
  • Coordinate your faculty recommendation as soon as possible. Faculty must fill out their own recommendation forms – including a short essay – through the following link: https://www.dental.umaryland.edu/scholarships/scholarship-faculty-recommendation-form/. Please provide them with enough lead time to complete this form by the 10th.
  • All DDS and Hygiene students are eligible. This includes D3 and D4 students.

SOD Vendor Expo: February 20 

On behalf of the Student Dental Association (SDA) at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, we invite you to register for the University of Maryland School of Dentistry Vendor Expo. The event will be held on Monday, February 20, 2017 from 4 – 7 p.m. at the School of Dentistry in the atrium (first floor).

The dental students look forward to this event and it provides an excellent opportunity to network. The cost of registration is $500.00, which includes a table for product display, a listing in the Vendor Expo Information Guide, and light refreshments.

Prior to the conclusion of the Vendor Expo on Monday, February 20, 2017, we are planning a raffle for the students and an incentive for the dental class with the highest attendance. If you would like to donate an item to be raffled, please email the Office of Student Affairs at SOD-StudentAffairs@umaryland.edu.

Should the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus be closed due to inclement weather on Monday, February 20, 2017, the Vendor Expo will be postponed until the following week and will be held on Monday, February 27, 2017 at the same time and location.

The HS/HSL will be offering free workshops to all UMB faculty, students, and staff. Topics cover a wide range of areas. Some of the workshops being offered this semester include: Data Management 101, RefWorks, Perfecting Your Poster Presentation, and Introduction to 3D Printing, PubMed, Health Information Resources for Culturally Diverse Patients.
